UPDATE: Russian police arrest Senator Arashukov over 2010 murder

(Adds comments in paragraphs 4–8)

MOSCOW, Jan 30 (PRIME) -- The Russian police arrested Senator Rauf Arashukov on Wednesday at a sitting of the Federation Council, the parliament’s supreme chamber, on suspicion of involvement in a murder of an aide to the president of the Karachayevo-Cherkessia republic in 2010.

Father of the senator Raul Arashukov was also arrested on suspicion of a 30 billion ruble theft of gas from Gazprom, spokeswoman for the Investigative Committee Svetlana Petrenko said.

She also said that investigators are working in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Stavropol, Makhachkala, Nevinnomyssk, Budyonovsk and Astrakhan on the Arashukovs case.

The Investigative Committee believes that accomplices of Rauf and Raul at regional energy enterprises created conditions for gas theft, Petrenko said

“The accomplices ensured the conclusion of contracts for supplies of more gas to the enterprises of the gas industry in the North Caucasus Federal District than was necessary for consumers. After that, they stole the gas, selling it to companies and individuals for cash. They created conditions for the theft of gas delivered to non-existent consumers,” she said.

Raul, who is currently advisor to CEO of Gazprom Mezhregiongaz, used his ties to appoint relatives and acquaintances to positions at enterprises of the fuel and energy complex in the North Caucasus, Petrenko said.

The police plan to detain several top executives at gas enterprises in the North Caucasus under this case, she added.

“In the framework of the criminal case on the embezzlement of natural gas of Gazprom, investigations are being carried out with a number of heads of gas companies in the North Caucasus Federal District: Ruslan Arashukov, Guzer Khashukayev, Nikolai Romanov, and Igor Travinov. They are planned to be detained,” she said.
